Today in nostalgia: ‘Worthless’ from The Brave Little Toaster

I love this song. It’s at the climax of The Brave Little Toaster, a gem of an animated film that came out in 1987. The film was originally pitched as a 3D movie for Disney by some dude named John Lasseter. Disney said no, fired Lasseter, and shifted the project to a different studio with a third of the original budget. Instead of accepting that The Brave Little Toaster had been earmarked to be one of those cheap cartoon flicks that could be easily shipped overseas, the crew working on it decided that they wanted to make it awesome.

It would later be screened at the 1988 Sundance Film Festival, where it got a Grand Jury Prize nomination. Lasseter on the other hand, would go on to direct a little 3D movie called Toy Story, also about inanimate objects having rich, harrowing lives.

But I digress. The mourning of doomed cars with sad headlight eyes haunts me to this very day.
