Today in random shit: Sailor Moon theme song, R&B style

August 27, 2014 at 10:18 pm (Random Shit) (, , , , )

The Sailor Moon theme song (whether in Tagalog, Japanese, English, or Platina Jazz) has a tendency to make the ’90s-minded anime junkie’s blood surge. In a good way. Even (and especially when) transformed by Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox into a retro R&B slow jam.

This is part of Bradlee and company’s terribly entertaining series of R&B-ized Saturday morning cartoon theme songs, which includes Darkwing Duck, Powerpuff Girls, Pokemon, and more.

Postmodern Jukebox also covers a wide array of pop songs. Ever wanted to hear Jason Derulo’s Talk Dirty as a traditional klezmer song? Or Lady Gaga’s Just Dance as a vintage ’40s ditty? You do now.

Today in random shit: Lost

July 10, 2014 at 1:19 pm (Random Shit) (, , )

I continue to think of myself as less of an Amanda Palmer fan, than a Neil Gaiman fan who just sort of bled into the Amanda Palmer side of YouTube music videos, but some days are for zoning out at lunch at your work desk and listening to ‘Lost’ and thinking ‘this is both a happy and sad song, but mostly sad, very sad.’

So continues the weird, lurching, haphazard updating of this blog n__n.

Today in awesome: Moonlight Densetsu

June 21, 2013 at 7:11 pm (Awesome, Random Shit) (, , , )

You know the Sailor Moon opening theme – the tolling of bells, the dramatic opening, the percussion accompanying the appearance of ‘90s anime girl archetypes.

The original Japanese version was about the itchy kind of infatuation. Moonlight is for chance encounters and the happy chills you get seeing the person you love.

Gomen ne sunao ja nakute
Yume no naka nara ieru
Shikou kairo wa shotto sunzen
Ima sugu aitai yo
Nakitaku naru you-na Moonlight
Denwa mo dekinai Midnight
Datte junjou doushiyou
Hatto wa mangekyou

(english translation)

“Sorry if I’m not gentle”
I can say that in my dreams.
My thoughts are about to short circuit.
I want to see you, now isn’t soon enough.
Just about ready to cry, moonlight,
Can’t call, midnight.
Because I’m so naive, what can I do?
My heart is a kaleidoscope!

The version my generation grew up with was the Tagalog rendition, which took a noticeably darker turn. In this version, the light of the moon brings longing, and what joy you can gleam from thinking of someone who may or may not be thinking of you back. Read the rest of this entry »

Today in random shit: Mein Herr

May 19, 2013 at 11:20 pm (Random Shit) (, , , )

A little Cabaret takes you a long way. You start off with the Judi Dench in 1968, introducing the world to Sally Bowles with ‘Don’t Tell Mama’.

The number is scrapped in the 1972 film, and replaced with ‘Mein Herr’, which is immortalized by Liza Minelli,

revisited by Jane Horrocks in the 1993 revival,

paid tribute to by Rachelle Rak in the 2001 Fosse revue,

and sauced up by Alan Cummings, for shits, in 2010.

Mile by mile by mile.

Today in random shit: Don’t hug me I’m scared

April 19, 2013 at 1:06 pm (Random Shit) (, , )

There are some strange, disturbing videos out in YouTube-land. And then there’s this.

I was expecting one of them feel-good artistic inspirational videos. Instead, I am amused, terrified, depressed, introspective and disturbed all at once (and at the end of a work week, that’s a good feeling to have).

Today in random shit: The Killing Type

February 23, 2013 at 4:17 pm (Random Shit) (, , )

There are a whole lot of Amanda Palmer songs. Sometimes I like them. Sometimes I don’t. And sometimes (as in the case of ‘In My Mind’), I listen to them over and over again until my definition of contentment at that particular point in time includes necessarily listening to that song.

‘I’m not the killing type, but I would kill to make you feel.’ This isn’t one of those songs I personally relate to, but it sinks in deep and takes root. ‘Die die die die.’

Today in random shit: Raindance Maggie

February 12, 2013 at 10:07 am (Random Shit) (, )

Who or what is Maggie and why is she raindancing? Like Dani California, is she a sublimation of all the women Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis has been in relationships with?

Wikipedia says that Maggie is a “collection of memories” that stewed at the back of Kiedis’ head til he heard the music for this song. There have apparently been two “Maggies” in his life, though who they are is anyone’s guess.

Ultimately though the true identity of Raindance Maggie is less important than the fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers would sing about her on a rooftop. While bopping.

Today in random shit: Rodrigo y Gabriela

January 9, 2013 at 2:05 pm (Random Shit) (, )

Rodrigo y Gabriela playing Diablo Rojo, which I first heard in the Puss in Boots movie.

Happy first week and three days of 2013 (randomly: 2013 is the first year since 1987 which features four different numbers. Mind blown).

Today in random shit: Pyromaniac’s playlist

December 24, 2012 at 9:31 am (Random Shit) (, , )

Because some people just want to watch the world burn, and possibly sing about it too.

This Fire (Franz Ferdinand)

This fire is out of control/ I’m gunna burn this city/Burn this city

Staring At The Sun (The Offspring)

I won’t be burned by the reflection/ Of the fire in your eyes/ As you’re staring at the sun

Today in random shit: Quixotic

December 10, 2012 at 12:30 pm (Random Shit) (, , , )

I’ve pointed out before that xkcd and Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal sort of cross tracks every now and then (regarding sheeple, supermarket brands, and physics) .

It’s happened again:

On a completely different topic, this was xkcd from three years ago:

I only really point this out because xkcd and SMBC are the only two webcomics I visit on a daily basis. Even if I know they don’t update on a daily basis.
