The game I never thought I’d play

February 14, 2013 at 6:35 pm (Articles / Interviews, Awesome, Nostalgia) (, , , )

Yesterday, I came home to find this – a package from Barcelona, containing a bunch of Suikoden merchandise, most specifically an original copy of Genso Suikogaiden Vol. 1: Swordsman of Harmonia. Only waited 12 years to get my hands on that.

Suikoden Day prize

It’s no secret that Suikoden II is my favoritest game in the whole wide world (one of the few things that gets me blogging regularly is gushing about Suikoden Day, or Why This Game Changed My Life). I got into Suikoden II at around 12, that age where the stories you hear just sort of stick with you forever. It was also at that age I discovered you can look shit up on this thing called the Internet. Suikosource didn’t exist yet, but there was Icy Brian and Rebel Hideout (what was once souleater.org) to go look at game art and character bios and stuff. Read the rest of this entry »

The Suikoden anime dream

November 28, 2012 at 3:39 pm (Awesome, Random Shit) (, , , )

Just because Suikoden Day 2012 is a couple of days away, here’s the opening of Konami’s 1999 text-based game Suikoden Gaiden Vol. 1: Swordsman of Harmonia, which fired the dream for a Suikoden anime series for more than a few merry fans of the series.

And then Vol. 2: Duel at Crystal Valley came out, which brought fan favorites like Millie and Viki to animated life.

Today in awesome: Top 10 favorite Suikoden moments

May 21, 2012 at 12:56 am (Awesome) (, , )

I have unabashedly expressed my love for Suikoden before. I did the 30 Day Meme, put some pictures together for Suikoden Day 2011, wrote an essay bout how this game can change your life. Recently, StarsOfDestiny.tumblr.com challenged people to put down their top 10 favorite Suikoden moments, so these are mine.

Most of these will be coming from Suikoden II, because while I have an appreciation for all the games, the second installment is what persists as a mini-kingdom of joy inside my head.

10. Viktor’s speech to Neclord

Viktor tells Neclord -precisely- how he intends on carrying out his revenge.

This is made doubly awesome by the fact that it follows a blatant attempt by Neclord to throw Viktor off by bringing up a zombie Daisy (Viktor responds to this likeness of the girl he loved by hacking its head off). The speech that follows is so awesome they made a play about it in Suikoden III.

Today in awesome: Power music

March 13, 2012 at 5:34 am (Awesome) (, , , , )

For to be feeling powerful when going out to destroy your enemies, or possibly early in the morning when you’re trying to wake up.

(If you’d rather journey to another world than water the fields with the blood of your foes, there’s music for that too).

Fever Dream (300 soundtrack)

Today in random shit: Batman and Joker singing

March 8, 2012 at 9:38 am (Random Shit) (, , , , )

Joker singing ‘Only You’ from the ending of Arkham City. If you’ve played the game (or been heavily spoilered) this makes perfect sense.

Shades of Gray (or Things I Learned About Life from a ’90s PlayStation Game)

February 15, 2012 at 9:09 am (Articles / Interviews) (, , , , , )

This was my submission for Suikoden Day 2011‘s Old Book (ie. essay writing) contest – 500-ish words on why I love Suikoden. There were some awesome prizes up for first and second place. I got third. Ah well. There’ll be another chance in Suikoden Day 2012 (huzzah!).

Also check out my other contribution to Suikoden Day 2011 – a bit of pictorial ramblage concerning Suikoden and alcohol.

suikoden 2

12-year-old me played Suikoden II on the recommendation of a school friend, who said it was “nice.” I assumed I’d be entertained. But Suikoden II did significantly more than that – it taught me about stories. Read the rest of this entry »

Today in awesome: Music to be transported to another world to

February 10, 2012 at 8:56 am (Awesome) (, , )

Unsurprisingly, from video games and anime that featured people jumping from one world into another (or set in entirely different worlds altogether). Features a lot of hypnotic female singing.

Today in random shit: One Winged Angel Sing-along

April 5, 2011 at 8:17 am (Nostalgia, Random Shit) (, , )

My friend Denise was at the Distant Worlds music of Final Fantasy concert held at the BAM Howard Gillman Opera House in New York, and I envy her the chance to sing One Winged Angel with an entire crowd of Final Fantasy fans in the presence of Nobuo Uematsu himself n__n.

“SE-PHI-ROTH!”
